History

Mason Black Lawyers’ foundation dates back to the 1970s when prominent Melbourne lawyer Leon Sholl formed a legal practice focused on providing Australian insurers with specialist legal representation.

Today, as Mason Black Lawyers, the firm employs 30 staff and boasts a strong client base which includes a number of Australia’s largest insurers along with commercial organisations.

 

Key dates:

1991 Founder Leon Sholl expands his sole practice and opens Melbourne based Sholl Nicholson Pty Ltd

1992 Sholl Nicholson’s success extends to debt recovery advice and litigation, and a partnership with Recoveries Corp creates an end-to-end, cost-effective recoveries model

1996-1999 Sholl Nicholson wins major clients including Zurich, Suncorp, Wesfarmers and IAG

2003 The firm is rebranded Mason Black Lawyers. Rapid growth on the eastern seaboard results in establishment of a Sydney office

2005 Mason Black’s success in the insurance field leads to its expansion into Workers Compensation

2007 A skilled commercial litigation team is created

2009 Leading lawyer Brett Turnbull joins Mason Black Lawyers to strengthen the specialist teams and drive further growth
